Entertainment Line-Up For Third Annual Evening Of Jazz
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Sunday, April 22, 2018, members of the com- munity will gather for an Evening of Jazz. Entitled, “Jazz’n At The Italian Club,” the event will be held at the Italian Club, 1731 E. 7th Av- enue, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The organizers said Tampa residents should pre- pare now for a great evening that will not only offer enter- tainment, but will also bene- fit a local school.
Scott Hardy, a member of the Positive Images Com- mittee said, “We have several people who have agreed to lend their talents. The evening will feature Andre Walker’s MG&S Band, PARIS All-Star Combo, Alex Harris, and HOTT MESS.
He further said, “We just want everyone to come out, enjoy a great evening, mix and mingle with friends, and just relax. This is an opportu- nity to dress up and give yourself a special evening that you will remember for a long time.”
In the past, the event was held at The Ritz. This year, the location may have

changed, but the evening promises to be just as uplift- ing as in the past.
Marvin Knight said, the goal of the organization is to raise $20,000 this year. All proceeds from the event will benefit the students at St. Peter Claver.
St. Peter Claver
Catholic School
In 1893, the St. Peter Catholic Church came into existence with the purchase of an old existing church. On February 2, 1894, two Sisters of the Holy Names began classes with 16 students.
After arsonists burned the building on Morgan Street, the church purchased a piece of property on the corner of Scott and Governor in the
Black community. The school reopened in October 1894.
The school was so suc- cessful that seven years later, its students were able to pass the Teacher’s Examination and receive certificates from the Board of Public Instruc- tion.
This year, St. Peter Claver Catholic School has provided the educational foundation for thousands of children. The school is celebrating its 125th Anniversary.
