Spike Lee To Direct Colin Kaepernick
 Docuseries For ESPN
  Jussie Smollett To Be
Spike Lee and Colin Kaepernick are teaming up with ESPN to tackle the life and career of the activist and former NFL player.
Seated together court side at Madison Square Garden for New York Knicks match-up against the Memphis Grizzlies, the duo have started produc- tion on the docuseries for the Disney-owned sports cabler. Unlike Netflix’s acclaimed mixed genre coming of age Colin in Black & White last year, from Kaepernick and Ava DuVernay, the Lee helmed project is the first un- scripted deep dive into the ex- San Francisco 49er’s saga from his own POV.

SPIKE LEE AND COLIN KAEPERNICK
For Lying To Police
A long-time supporter of the unsigned quarterback who has been shunned by the NFL after Kaepernick took a knee in 2016 during the national anthem as a protest against police violence and social in-
justice, Lee will produce the project with ESPN Films through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. Kaeper- nick will also produce along with Atlantic journalist Jemele Hill.
Jussie Smollett, who was convicted last month for lying to police about a racist, ho- mophobic attack that author- ities said he staged, will return to court for sentencing March 10, a judge said Thurs- day.
Cook County Judge James Linn set the sentenc- ing date in Chicago for the former “Empire” actor, who told the judge he was in New York, during a hearing on Zoom.
Smollett was found guilty by a jury Dec. 9 of five felony counts of disorderly conduct under a subsection of the law that prohibits making false reports to police. He was ac- quitted on a sixth count.
Smollett, who is Black and gay, maintained through- out the nearly three-year legal battle that he was attacked in downtown Chicago in Janu- ary 2019 by people who yelled racist and anti-gay slurs and

put a noose around his neck. He denied during the trial that he staged the attack.
While the charges carry a possible sentence of three years in prison, legal experts have said Smollett is un- likely to get prison time for the low-level felonies, and is more likely to be sentenced to probation and ordered to per- form community service.
