Historian Seeks Zion Cemetery, Robles Pond Interviews
Do you have ancestors buried at Tampa Heights’ Zion Cemetery? Did you live in the area known as Robles Pond in 1950? Do you have photographs of yourself, your relatives or friends in Robles Pond or in the early days at Robles Park Village Homes? If so, you can be a part of the Zion Cemetery/Robles Pond Sankofa Project.
The existence of the African American Zion Cemetery was announced in the local press in June, 2019. Since then the Tampa Hous- ing Authority has led the ef- fort to respectfully honor the hundreds of burials that have been located on the Robles Park Village property.
Tampa Historian Fred Hearns, a member of the Zion Cemetery Advisory Committee, is conducting in- terviews with persons who want to share their memories of what life was like before 1954 in the area bordered by: Virginia Avenue (north), Lake Avenue (south), Central Avenue (east) and N. Florida Avenue (west).
The Tampa Housing Au- thority is planning to rede-

velop Robles Park Village. The process includes relocat- ing current residents from the development and collect- ing the history of the site. Anyone who has memories or photos of the area taken in the 1950s or earlier should contact Hearns at (813) 545-3183 or fhearns@net- zero.net.
“We have lost too much of Tampa’s African American history over the years,” Hearns said. “Let’s preserve as many stories, photos and artifacts from the Zion Ceme- tery and from the Robles Pond area as possible.”
