The GEMS (Girls Empow- ered and Motivated to Suc- ceed) at St. Peter Claver Catholic School presented their 2015-2016 program during the school’s annual Awards Program on Friday,
June 3, 2016.
The GEMS, comprised of
14 girls in grades 4th through 7th, were selected by Sister Maria Babatunde, princi- pal, for their leadership po- tential at the historic school. A good attitude, good grades, self-control, self-respect, good behavior and love of God are qualities favored for selection. GEMS were pre- sented certificates of excel- lence, with Claireline and A’Nyah named GEMS lead- ers, respectively.
The theme of the GEMS program was, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” taken from Dr. Seuss’ book of the same name. As such, the GEMS had an amazing year of exposure to impactful places and peo- ple. Much of the agenda was determined by the GEMS’ ca- reer interests. Presentations from local professionals and field trips to various educa- tional institutions and busi- nesses provided firsthand encounters of social and edu- cational enrichment.
Specifically, the GEMS welcomed inspiring informa- tion specialists for presenta- tions – Mrs. Marlina McClure, Dining Etiquette;
Attorney Karen Fultz,
Law and a Hobby of Marathon Runner; Ailana Forde, 8-year-old Entrepre- neur; Sister Maria Ba- batunde, Religious Ministry; Mrs. Gina Depula, Creative Crafts; Mrs. Ruby Brown, Tea History and Etiquette; Mrs. Sonja Garcia, Global and Local Leaders.
Field trips broadened the GEMS’ knowledge and appre- ciation of their community and its resources. The GEMS visited: Robert W. Saunders Public Library; Victorian Christmas Stroll at the Henry B. Plant Museum on the cam- pus of the University of Tampa; Weekend Catholic Retreat; Dr. Kermit Har- vey’s Animal Hospital; Tea Time with Mrs. Capitano; Lunch at the Columbia Restaurant, along with a pres- entation and tour by the Chef; Courtroom and chambers of Judge Barbara Twine Thomas.
The GEMS organization was founded by Sister Maria Babatunde, princi- pal. Ms. LoriAnn Toppin is faculty advisor; Mrs. Sonja Garcia is mentor.
