Praise With Music Exodus 15:11-21 (KJV)
   The Scriptures
11 Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.
13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.
14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabi- tants of Palestina.
15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trem- bling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.
16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast pur- chased.
17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheri- tance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have es- tablished.
18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.
19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Is-
rael went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
21 And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed glo- riously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
A Song Of Praise
In this week’s lesson we have the first song recorded in the Bible. It has been aptly called the ‘Song of Moses,’ and the ‘Song of the Re- deemed.’ Moses and the peo- ple he led out of Egypt and across the Red Sea had something to sing about. God had redeemed them! So Moses taught the people a song describing the mighty works of God.
After the LORD brought the tenth plague upon Egypt which was the death of all firstborn humans and ani- mals, the Egyptians urged the Israelites to leave Egypt immediately (see Exodus 12:31-33). Over 600,000 men plus women and chil-
dren journeyed from Ramses to Succoth (see Exodus 12:37). A large company of non-Israelites, as well as a great deal of livestock, also made the journey (see Exo- dus 12:38).
The LORD told Moses that Pharaoh would come after them (see Exodus 14:4). However, God also said that He would crush Pharaoh’s forces and bring honor to Himself and make His iden- tity further known to the Egyptians.
When Moses obeyed God by stretching his rod over the Red Sea, the LORD used a strong east wind to drive back the sea all through the night and made the seabed into dry ground. When the Egyptians pursued the Is- raelites into the Red Sea, God commanded Moses to stretch his hand over the sea and the waters returned drowning all the soldiers who followed after God’s people (see Exo- dus 14:23-28). But the chil- dren of Israel walked through on dry ground and the LORD saved them from the Egyptians. As a result the people feared God and be- lieved Him and His servant Moses (see Exodus 14:29-
31).
In Exodus 15:1-10, Moses
and the children of Israel began to sing a song describ- ing how the LORD had tri- umphed gloriously over the Egyptians.
Throughout biblical his- tory, God has revealed Him- self to His people by mighty acts. The Jews remembered God for a glorious deliver- ance from their slavery in Egypt. As a result, Moses and Miriam led the people in a song of triumph and praise to the LORD. When we think of all the marvelous things God has done, is doing and will do for us, we should do as the Psalmist declared: “O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done mar- vellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory” (see Psalms 98:1).
But even more signifi- cantly than His wonderful acts, God has provided eter- nal life for His people. Chris- tians must always remember that God gave His Son to pay the redemption price for our sins and that He raised Him up again. At the very least, doesn’t knowing that deserve a song of praise?
