BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
A student died Tuesday after collapsing during condi- tioning drills. The incident took place at an East Tampa school.
According to the Tampa Police Department, at ap- proximately 4 p.m., the teenager, identified as Hezekiah B. Walters, was at Middleton High School, 4801 N. 22nd Street, at foot- ball conditioning practice. The 14-year-old collapsed and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital by Tampa Fire Rescue. He was pro- nounced deceased at the hos- pital.
A spokesman for the po- lice department said the in- vestigation has revealed that the team was approximately 30 to 40 minutes into the conditioning drills when the
teenager collapsed. The drills include weightlifting, wind sprints, and water breaks.
His cause of death will be determined by the Hillsbor- ough County Medical Exam- iner’s Office, police said.
Walters was an incom- ing freshman at Middleton High School. He had com- pleted his middle school edu- cation at Franklin Boys Academy.
Ross Anderson, founder of Men of Vision, Inc., said the teenager had been an ac- tive member of his organiza- tion for the past 4 years. “He is the first kid I have lost in the 13 years I’ve been doing this. It is a shock.”
The investigation into the death is continuing.
A family member de- scribed Hezekiah as a quiet child who was very smart, and loved video games.
“He was so excited about

playing football. He said he was going out there every day
like the upper classmen and grind because he knew that is what it would take. He was very excited about playing.”
The son of Ms. Phyllis Walters and Pastor Felix Walters, Hezekiah was also looking forward to going to college and becoming an entrepreneur. He planned to continue the family tradition of attending Florida A & M University, his cousin said.
In addition to his parents, Hezekiah has an older sis- ter, other family members and friends.
His cousin said the fam- ily is asking the community to hold up Hezekiah’s coaches and teammates at Middleton High School dur- ing this time of bereavement.
Funeral services were in- complete at press time. Ray Williams Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrange- ments.
