Lt. Colonel Ricardo “Rick” Kinsey announced the 2017 recipients of the scholarship in his name. The 2 students will be attending Florida A&M University in the fall.
This year’s recipients of the Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo "Rick" Kinsey Scholarship are Zataria Ray and Devin Watkins.
The Kinsey Scholarship is awarded to seniors from Tampa Bay Technical, Howard W. Blake, and Middleton High Schools who exhibit high aca- demic achievement and have been accepted to Florida A&M University (FAMU).
Zataria Ray is a senior at Tampa Bay Technical High School who will major in Chemistry and Pre-Medicine.

Kinsey, who is a member of the Plant City Chapter, Florida A&M National Alumni Association, was overwhelmed with joy at the number of stu- dents who applied for his scholarship.
“I was amazed at the quality of our students. Initially, I was only going to give one scholar- ship, but after reviewing the applications, we decided to give two. “Congratulations Zataria and Devin on becoming part of the Rattler family,” he said.

Hair Stylist Steps Out On Faith To Open Doors To Beauty Supply Store
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
With last week being recognized as “Small Business Week,” a local cosmetologist chose the perfect weekend to step out on faith to open a beauty supply store.
Sana Hampton was the hostess this past weekend for the Grand Opening of Envyy Hair & Beauty, LLC, a family-owned and operated business. The event was held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 2705 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.
A member of Revealing Truth Ministries, Ms. Hampton has been in the hair care busi- ness as a stylist for 20 years. Currently, she is a stylist in her sister’s salon – Sista Sista Beauty Salon – where she has been for 12 years, and will continue as a stylist.
Describing herself as an “optimist with a God-fearing heart, Ms. Hampton, 37, ex- plained, “Owning my own beauty supply store has always been a dream of mine. I come from a business-oriented family. Growing up, my fa- ther (Henry) owned a boutique and variety store; my oldest sister (Renee Planko) owns a seafood and soul food restaurant, Ladies of the Sea; another sister (Fatima Clanton) owns a beauty salon, Sista Sista; my brother (Wali Clanton) has a mobile detailing busi- ness, Shine On Me; and my nieces, “The Evers,” invented an Edge Control Brush, which the Sentinel featured several weeks ago,” Ms. Hampton said.
Her reasoning for starting a hair supply store: “For decades, the beauty supply industry has been dominated by Asian entrepreneurs. I would love to see other races grow and succeed in that industry as well,” she explained.
“Over the years, I’ve sent my clients to nu- merous beauty supply stores to get hair. They would give them the wrong type, wrong color
of hair and texture, with rude customer serv- ice. The client would feel unwanted and un- happy,” Ms. Hampton explained.
What will be different about her business? She said, “my store is small, but it has my per- sonality in it, which is warm, big in heart, sweet-spirited and loving... filled with in- tegrity, respect, positive energy and outstand- ing customer service.
“Seeing my family’s hard work made me strive harder to accomplish my goals in life. I want to encourage, inspire and motivate oth- ers along the way that with God on your side, you can achieve anything in life,” Ms. Hamp- ton concluded.
The mother of a 16-year-old daughter, Ms. Hampton enjoys reading, baking, bike riding, traveling to other countries, walking her dog, going to church and spending quality time with family. Hair is her passion, however.
