Investigation Into Murder Of Young Man Continues
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On the night Aqkil David Brooks died, it was the most devastating news any family could have re- ceived. More than two weeks after the murder, his family is still trying to come to grips with his death.
His aunt, Ms. Nicole Brooks, said it was about 9:30 p.m., when someone told the family members he had been shot. She remem- bers that she, his father, and other family members were sitting outside and ran to the scene.
The 18-year-old with so much promise did not sur- vive. Through tears, Ms. Brooks said, “He was a good child. He was well loved and loving. He was a gorgeous kid. He was working at Checkers and he had just

bought his first car. He comes from a two-parent family and he didn’t hang out in the streets and get into trouble. He was ambushed.”
A Tampa native, Brooks attended the public schools of Hillsborough County. He was attending Gary Adult School earning credits for his GED at the time of his death.
Ms. Brooks said her
nephew loved watching “That 70s Show,” football and the Bucs. “He had a sense of humor that could light up the room.”
At the time of the shoot- ing, Brooks was in the 8200 block of Trammell Trail, in Riverview. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. However, no arrests have been made.
Detectives are asking any- one with information about the murder to contact Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1- 800-873-TIPS, or visit www.crimestopperstb.com.
