Caregivers Financial Security Seminar Set For Saturday
BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
On Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 10:00am, the Tampa (FL) Chapter of The Links, Incor- porated will again partner with Thomas Financial to hold a Financial Planning Seminar.
This seminar is titled, Care- givers Financial Security and is the fourth in a series of seminars put on by National Trends Facet, led by Mary Dance, chairperson and Willa Peterson, co-chair.
The Tampa Chapter is fo- cusing on raising knowledge about financial institutions and practices in the African American community.
Mary Dance states, “it’s important for us to under- stand the procedures that need to take place as people age. Caregivers and their par- ents or relatives should start preparing their finances for long-term care before some- thing catastrophic occurs.”
Financial planning for care- giving will prepare and posi- tion both the caregiver and the patient to retain their fi- nancial independence. Lack of planning can cause interven- tion by government agencies and surrender of money that is not protected.
The need and costs of pro- viding care will increase sig- nificantly as the population
continues to age and by 2030, it is estimated that 24 million Americans will need long term care.
The level of care that will be needed along with who will provide the care are two of the most important factors. Where the care will take place and the cost are also critical.
Care can become necessary for help with daily activities (eating, bathing, and dress- ing) or cognitive impairment (Alzheimer’s).
Seventy percent of people turning age 65 will need long- term care at some point in their lives. Meanwhile, a pri- vate room in a nursing home is expected to cost $10,000 per month by 2030.
It is vital that caregivers and their charges know how to manage the confusing maze that is long-term care.

Forty-One Year McDonald’s Employee Loves Her Job
BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
If you get your morning breakfast or coffee at the Mc- Donald’s on East Hillsbor- ough Avenue, more than likely you have been greeted by Ms. Wanda Hill. Sport- ing a fancy new hairdo and making sure you receive fast and efficient service, Hill began working at the loca- tion in 1980. Forty-one years later, she is now the Break- fast and Courtesy (Customer Service) chair and happier than she has ever been.
The Tampa native gradu- ated from Tampa Bay Tech in 1979 and joined McDonald’s the next year. She has re- mained at the same store for her entire career.
Hill fondly says that she would be running errands and people who have worked for her will come up to her and introduce her to their

children and sometimes grandchildren. She says that she loves her job and the people she meets.
She started as a grill cook, then cashier. After three years, she received her first promotion to manager. She had on-the-job training and then was sent to various management training classes
set up by McDonald’s. There, she learned the business of fast food and handling differ- ent types of situations.
Hill decided that she would not climb higher on the management ladder be- cause of her devotion to her daughter and family. Her family is extremely impor- tant to her and being heavily involved in her daughter’s life is the most important thing.
Little things mean a lot to Hill. She enjoys a quiet life and working hard. She does- n’t miss work and she still has fun working. Her mentees keep in touch with her, sending her cards and notes.
Hill speaks fondly of the late Joe Casper, owner of multiple McDonald’s fran- chises. He encouraged Hill personally and urged her to stay at McDonald’s. He called the Hillsborough loca- tion “his store” and he wanted Hill working there.
Ms. Hill is the proud mother of Litia, and step- mother to Jarvell, Austin, and Percy Hill, Jr. She is grandmother of six. She and her husband, Percy Hill met at McDonald’s in 1994 and were married in 2001. She enjoys spending time with her sister Vera, and her best friend Lenwood.
