Sligh And Lockhart Students Get Health And Career Advice Through Moffitt’s Healthy Kidz Program
BY KENYA WOODARD Sentinel Feature Writer
Alicia Burr, 13, wants to be an obstetrician and gyne- cologist when she’s older.
So on Tuesday, Sligh Mid- dle School kicked off her journey to becoming a doctor with a visit to the Moffitt Cancer Center to learn about health careers and healthy habits.
Burr said the desire to be a doctor stems from a per- sonal experience.
“My Mom told me that I was supposed to be born with Down syndrome, but I proved the doctors wrong,” she said. “I want to become a doctor to inspire and help children.”
The eighth-grader was one of 80 students from Sligh
Middle and Lockhart Ele- mentary School to visit the hospital for lectures on nutri- tion and exercise as part of the Moffit Healthy Kidz pro- gram, a community outreach program that teaches stu- dents about cancer preven- tion, healthy living, and positive life choices.
There’s also another bonus for students: an intro- duction to health-related ca- reers, said program founder, Nikki Inda-Ross.
“They do lab tours and we talk about different careers,” she said.
On Tuesday, students at- tended lectures about nutri- tion and exercise and learned about the job duties of a die- titian and personal trainer before joining Tampa Bay Buccaneer players outdoors
for some fun drills.
The students weren’t the
only ones enjoying the day. “It’s just as fun for me as it is for them,” said O. J. Howard, a rookie tight-end
for Tampa Bay.
The best part is offering
students words of encourage- ment to do their best no mat- ter in everything they do, he said.
“And you don’t always have to be a professional ath- lete,” he said. “Kids nowa- days know they can be anything they put their minds to.”
For sixth-grader Tommy Motta, 12, that means being a chemist.
“I want to help people and get rich,” he said. “I want to help find a cure for all the diseases.”
