Be Prepared For Hurricane Season
Hurricane season officially begins on June 1st and ends November 30th. U. S. weather forecasters predict a near nor- mal or normal season. The National Oceanic and Atmos- pheric Administration (NOAA) said there is a 70% likelihood of 13 to 20 named storms, of which 7 to 11 could become hurricanes, including 3 to 6 major hurricanes.
This year, the theme is: “Sur- vive, Thrive, and Stay Alive.” As you prepare for the hurri- cane season, several items should be included in your survival kit. Some of those items are:
Emergency Kit
In a major disaster, emer- gency workers may not be able to reach everyone right away. In some cases, it may take 3 or more days for help to arrive. Prepare kits to last up to 7 days.
Having a plan for your fam- ily and their needs will help ensure their safety and com- fort during these difficult
times.
There are some basic items
you should stock --- water, food, first aid supplies, cloth- ing, bedding, tools, emer- gency supplies, and special items.
Water - at least 1 gallon per day, per person
Food – It could take as long as 72 hours (3 days) before First Responders can reach you, depending on where you live. Every home should have enough food to last 3 to 7 days. The food should be:
• non-perishable, packaged or canned food and juices
• ready to eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
• canned juices, milk, soup
• sugar, salt, pepper, etc.
• foods for infants or the eld- erly and snack foods
• high energy foods --- peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix, etc
• vitamins
• comfort foods --- cookies, hard candy, sweetened cere-
als, instant coffee, tea bags, etc.
• non-electric can opener
• cooking tools and fuel
• paper plates and plastic utensils
• medicine dropper
NOTE:
Water can be purified
by adding 16 drops of bleach (plain) to one gal- lon of water
Blankets, Sleeping Bags, Pillows, etc.
Clothing:
• seasonal clothing
• rain gear and sturdy shoes
Special Items: • Weather
• Radio,
• Flashlight and extra bat- teries
• Cash - Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended periods.
• Keys
• Toys, Books and Games
• Cell Phone --- fully charged cell phone with extra battery and charger
Vehicle fuel tanks filled
First Aid Kit, Medicines, and Prescription Drugs
• Antibiotic ointment to pre- vent infection
• Burn ointment to prevent in- fection
• Eyewash solution to flush the eyes or as general decont- aminant
• Dust mask
• Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
• Assorted sized sterile gauze pads
• hypoallergenic adhesive tape • Sterile roller bandages
• Scissors
• Tweezers
• Needle
• Moistened towelettes
• Antiseptic
• Thermometer
• Petroleum jelly
• Assorted safety pins
• Cleansing agent, soap
• Latex gloves
• Sunscreen
• Non-Prescription Drugs
• Aspirin
• Anti-diarrhea medication
• Antacid
• Syrup of Ipecac (poison con- trol)
• Activated charcoal (poison control)

• Emergency preparedness manual
• Fire extinguisher: small can- ister, ABC type
• Pliers

• Matches in a waterproof container
• Aluminum foil
• Plastic storage containers
• Signal flare
• Paper, pencil
• Needles, thread
• Medicine dropper
• Shut-off wrench, to turn off Household gas and water
• Whistle
• Plastic sheeting
Sanitation:
• Toilet paper, towelettes* • Soap, liquid detergent*
• Feminine supplies*

• Plastic bucket with tight lid • Disinfectant

Important Family Documents:
Keep these records in a waterproof, portable con- tainer.
• Will, insurance policies, con- tracts,
• Deeds, stocks and bonds
• Passports, social security cards,
• Immunization records
• Bank account numbers
• Credit card account numbers and companies
• Inventory of valuable house- hold goods
• Important phone numbers
• Family records (birth, mar- riage, death certificates)
Pet Care Items:
Note: If you must evacuate, pets are not allowed in shel- ters; make plans early
• proper identification and immunization records
