Hit And Run Driver Arrested After Hitting Detective

A 43-year-old man was ar- rested Tuesday after he rear- ended an unmarked police vehicle and fled the scene. The accident took place just before 6 p.m., on Bruce B. Downs Blvd.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, an unidentified detective was stopped at a traffic light on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., near Commerce Palms Blvd., when he was struck from the rear by a gray Mustang.
The detective made contact with the driver, later identified as Jack Knapper, and in- structed him to pull over for a traffic crash investigation.
Instead, Knapper report- edly fled the scene. A short time later, a citizen reported that he had witnessed the crash and fol- lowed the fleeing Mustang to I- 75, just north of the Fletcher Avenue exit.
The witness told police the driver got out of the Mustang, ran into a heavily wooded area, and went into the Hillsborough River.
Once Knapper was located in the water, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper and a deputy jumped into the Hillsborough River and escorted Knapper out of the water and arrested him.
Knapper was charged with leaving the scene of a crash, fleeing to elude, driving without a valid license and resisting arrest without vio- lence. He could face a possible DUI charge as well.
Knapper was taken to Tampa General Hospital to get checked for exhaustion before being taken to the Hillsborough County Jail.
