Sloane Stephens Wins Grand Slam Against Madison Keys
Picking up where Serena and Venus Williams left off, Sloane Stephens beats Madison ‘Maddie’ Keys to win the U. S. Open.
NEW YORK -- Sloane Stephens never looked shaken by the setting or the stakes in her first Grand Slam final. Her opponent, Madison Keys, most defi- nitely did.
Stephens easily beat her close friend Keys 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday to win the US Open, capping a remarkably rapid rise after sitting out 11 months because of foot sur- gery. She attributes her rapid recovery to her boyfriend, soccer star, Jozy Altidore.
Altidore couldn't be in New York to watch his girl- friend, tennis player Sloane Stephens, win the US Open, but an MLS game wasn't going to stop him from find- ing out the result.
Altidore was on hand to
watch Stephens in the semifinal earlier this week, but Toronto FC's game on Saturday kicked off shortly before Stephens defeated Madison Keys to win her first major.
”I should just retire now," Stephens joked. "I told Maddie I'm never going to be able to top this. I mean, talk about a comeback."
The 83rd-ranked Stephens joins Kim Cli- jsters as the only unseeded US Open women's champi- ons in the Open era, which dates to 1968.
All four of the U.S. Open semifinalists were American for the first time in 36 years. Keys beat CoCo Van- deweghe 6-1, 6-2 in the other semi, and Stephens defeated Venus Williams.
BERNARD REEDY
Bernard Reedy wasn’t exactly a shoe-in to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 53- man roster. Tampa Bay re- tained just five wide receivers and had 11 for the majority of training camp. Four of them – Mike Evans, DeSean Jack- son, Adam Humphries and Chris Godwin – were virtual locks to make the team.
But Reedy’s performance on special teams helped him land a spot on the Buccaneers’ opening day roster. That means he won’t have to go back to his day job, at least for now.
Reedy spent his offseason working for Care Ride, a com- pany that assists with the transportation of wheel chair- bound residents. He made $11 an hour, but admitted he loved the work and the people he had the opportunity to meet.
After making the Bucs’ final roster, he detailed his makeshift workouts he would conduct in his van, using the arm rests to do dips and taking exercise breaks to ensure he was in shape for training camp.
With evacuations under way in the Tampa Bay area, Reedy decided to give his old employer a call. He spent the past few days assisting dis- abled residents, particularly in St. Petersburg, escape Hurri- cane Irma.

BERNARD REEDY
Despite Hurricane Irma plowing through Tampa, the Buccaneers ap- pear to be in position to make season debut at home.
With Hurricane Irma mowing through Florida and still making its way up the eastern part of the country, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to make alternate “just in case” plans for their sea- son debut against the Chicago Bears. Currently working out in Charlotte, the
Bucs are trying to go about business as usual – but they still had a lot of questions to answer just six days away from the game.
Depending on the sever- ity of the damage, the Bucca- neers may be relocating their contest to a safer location, considering rescheduling is out of the question. A source cites New Orleans and White Sulphur Springs, West Vir- ginia as potential game and practice locations.
