Death Of Man Hit By Police Car Under Investigation
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
More than a month ago, a 24-year-old Tampa man was critically injured after being struck by a police cruiser.
According to the Tampa Police Department, officers attempted to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The vehicle was reportedly taken during an armed home invasion.
On October 20th, Tampa Police officers observed the vehicle, and attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, who police identified as Dusharn Weems, reportedly drove away.
It is unclear where the ve- hicle was first observed. How- ever, police said the driver later abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
A second officer had joined the pursuit and pulled into a parking lot at North 30th Street and E. Busch Blvd.
Weems is alleged to have collided “with the side front panel of the police car and fell. He was treated at the scene and transported to the hospi- tal, where he died several days later,” police stated in the press release.

Stephen Hegarty,
spokesman for the Tampa Po- lice Department, said the de- partment is waiting on an official cause of death from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“Once we receive the re- port, we will bring the inci- dent to the State Attorney’s Office for review. We will also conduct our own investiga- tion,” Hegarty said.
Attorney Haydee Oropesa, who is represent- ing the Weems family said Weems died at 4 a.m., on October 24th.
In a timeline account of the incident, on the Florida You Judge website, Attor-
ney Oropesa posted a daily log of what has taken place since October 20th.
She stated that according to Weems’ brother, Weems was placed on life support upon reaching the hospital.
She stated that a Tampa Police officer and detective visited the mother of Weems’ 2-year-old daughter the day after the accident and told her that “a patrol car had ‘bumped’” him. However, no one contacted his family and made them aware of what had taken place. She also stated that Chief Dugan nor Mayor Bob Buckhorn never acknowledged or noti- fied the community that the incident had taken place.
According to Attorney Oropesa, Chief Brian Dugan, Tampa Police Attor- ney Kirby Rainesberger, and Cpl. Matthew P. Bel- monte met with Attorneys representing Dusharn Weems’ family.
Attorney Oropesa said, “We waited patiently for them to release the information... TPD put out a media alert about Dusharn Weems on November 22, 2017.”
