Women Of Color Golf And Youth Group To Be Honored By White House
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
“From West Tampa to the White House”
Women of Color Golf, Inc. (WOCG) and Girls on the Green Tee (GOTGT) programs have been selected by The White House as a Champion of Change for Extracurricu- lar Enrichment for Mar- ginalized Girls!
On Friday, September 30th, The White House will honor Clemmie Perry and other Champions as part of Presi- dent Barack Obama’s initia- tive to recognize everyday Americans making positive changes within communities all across America. Watch it LIVE on Friday, September 30th, at 11:30 a. m. (EST) at www.white- house.gov/live or you can locate it on YouTube.
After losing her job with Lockheed-Martin, Ms. Perry, daughter of Mrs. Doris Ross Reddick, decided she would do something she’d always wanted to do – take up golfing lessons.
“When I decided to do that, I found out that there were not many women in my age group and young girls, not at all,” she explained. Having an athletic background as an NFL cheer- leader in Miami, Ms. Perry

wondered, where she should start to introduce younger women of color to the sport. That led her to Hillsborough Community College Continuing Education program. “We started with 9 girls and in 2 years we’ve trained nearly 300 in the fundamentals of golf,” she explained.
The Women of Color Golfers also secured the partnership of the Tampa Sports Authority under Kennie Sims and the Golfer’s Grail, where the classes are taught. “We still have small classes, but we’re making strides,” she said of Girls on the Green Tee program.
WOCG & GOTGT golf clin- ics provide an entryway for women and girls of color to see a different kind of future. Golf teaches basic life skills and will
prepare them to enter a diverse and competitive changing world.
“It had to be the favor of God,” Ms. Perry stated. “We are excited to receive this pres- tigious honor on behalf of all of our Board Members, committee members, volunteers, the City of Tampa Black History Com- mittee and our corporate part- ners who supported and believed in our mission. We sin- cerely appreciate your efforts and would like to personally say a tremendous “THANK YOU!” We could not have gotten from “West Tampa to The White House,” without the efforts of our Tampa Bay Community.”
Ms. Perry will be accompa- nied on the trip to the White House by Sam Harris, VP of Business Development; Dr. Michael Cooper, former Di- rector of Diversity, World Golf Foundation; and Jensen Har- ris, a member of the Girls on the Green Tee program.
To support this mission, the group is seeking corporate sponsors and donors to train more girls. Donate at: http://www.womenofcolor- golf.org/women_of_color_golf _tampa_fl_sponsors.html. To learn more about the sponsor levels, please contact Sam Harris at: sharris@womenof- colorgolf.org.
