Commissioners Clear Way For St. Petersburg-To-Tampa Ferry
Hillsborough County leaders hope this ferry will be taking people across the bay beginning November 1st.
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Last Wednesday, the Hills- borough County Board of Commissioners gave their approval to a project that’s been talked about for years – a ferry that will link Tampa to St. Petersburg.
The proposed $1.4 million pilot project will need to be approved by the city councils of Tampa and St. Petersburg, as well as the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners.
Hillsborough County Com-
mission Chair, Sandra Murman, said they hope to get the ferry carrying passen- gers by November 1st.
“I love the ferry. It’s a new mode for transportation and will ease traffic on the road- ways.
“Unlike other cities, I’ve al- ways felt our waterways were underused, and it’s for our citizens.”
Comm. Chair Murman
said it’s going to be low cost, and it will create jobs when the 6-month trial period is over.
“It’s going to help with tourism, and can be an op- tion of travel for people visit- ing or attending conventions. This was all made possible through corporate partner- ships.
“The county’s share of the investment is $300,000, and we hope to get 50% of that back. I think it’s a great in- vestment."
The cost of riding the ferry will be $10 each way, and will be free the week of Thanks- giving. There will also be dis- count packages available.
