Big Boi Gets His Endorsement Hustle On
Nas Facing Potential Lawsuit From Pete Rock Over 'Illmatic' Royalties
The endorsement game has become a huge source of addi- tional revenue for a bevy of Hip Hop artists in recent years. Snoop Dogg kicked down the doors with appear- ances in ads for giant brands such as Tostitos, Corona and Dunkin’ Donuts, while Ice-T has popped up in commercials for GEICO, CarShield, Tide and, most recently, Cheerios. Meanwhile, Fat Joe just landed a deal with White Cas- tle, which said a lot about how far Hip Hop has come.
“There was a time when brands didn’t want to associate with Hip Hop culture, so it will always be important and we’ve come a long way,” Fat Joe said in a recent interview with HipHopDX. “Hip Hop sets the trend today, so the brands and the endorsements are gravitat- ing to our culture. Now, it’s Big Boi’s turn. On January 10, the Outkast leg- end shared a Twitter clip an- nouncing his new endorsement deal with Real- tor.com. The caption read sim- ply, “Big On Big! @realtordotcom.
One of the more memo- rable contributions on Nas’ acclaimed debut, Illmatic, is producer Pete Rock’s work on the track “The World Is Yours.” Rock not only cre- ated the instrumental for the song, but also wrote lyrics and sang vocals. Now, nearly three decades after its re- lease, it appears the Mt. Ver- non-bred boardsman is not satisfied with the compensa- tion he’s received thus far and is planning to file suit against Nas later this month.
According to Page Six, the legendary producer has ac- cused Nas and his team of
