Boxing Great Marvelous Marvin Hagler Dies At 66
Marvin Hagler (right) battled Thomas Hearns (left) in a bout that some considered boxing's greatest match.
Former Knicks great Patrick Ewing complained Thursday that he’s not get- ting recognized by security at Madison Square Garden ― the arena he called home for 15 seasons in a Hall of Fame career.
Ewing's Georgetown won the Big East tournament Sunday.
Ewing, now the coach of Georgetown, said Garden staff has repeatedly accosted him and stopped him since he arrived with his team for the Big East Tournament.
Ewing is easy to identify.
He stands 7 feet tall. Not to mention that his retired jer- sey number hangs from the ceiling.
“I thought this was my building,” Ewing said after Georgetown defeated Vil- lanova in the quarterfinals on Thursday. “And I feel terrible that I’m getting stopped, ac- costed, asking for passes. Everybody in this building should know who the hell I am. And I’m getting stopped. I can’t move around this building. I was like, ‘What the hell? Is this Madison Square Garden?’

Marvelous Marvin Ha- gler stopped Thomas Hearns in a fight that lasted less than eight minutes yet was so epic that it still lives in boxing lore. Two years later he was so disgusted after los- ing a decision to Sugar Ray Leonard — stolen, he claimed, by the judges — that he never fought again.
One of the great mid- dleweights in boxing history, Hagler died Saturday at the age of 66. His wife, Kay, an- nounced his death on the Facebook page for Hagler’s fans.
“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement,” she wrote. “Today unfortunately my beloved husband Mar- velous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our fam- ily requests that you respect our privacy during this diffi- cult time.”
Hagler fought on boxing’s biggest stages against its biggest names, as he, Leonard, Hearns and Roberto Duran dominated the middleweight classes dur- ing a golden time for boxing in the 1980s. Quiet with a brood- ing public persona, Hagler fought 67 times over 14 years as a pro out of Brockton, Mas- sachusetts, finishing 62-3-2 with 52 knockouts.
“If they cut my bald head open, they will find one big boxing glove,” Hagler once said. “That’s all I am. I live it.”
Hagler was unmistakable in the ring, fighting out of a southpaw stance with his bald head glistening in the lights. He was relentless and he was vicious, stopping opponent after opponent during an eight year run that began with a disputed draw against Vito Antuofermo in 1979 that he later avenged.
Marvin Hagler Health Update Before Death Sparks Anti-Vaccine Messages
A health update on Mar- velous Marvin Hagler hours before the boxing leg- end died Saturday night raised eyebrows.
Fellow boxing great Thomas Hearns shared with his followers that Ha- gler was "fighting the after ef- fects of the vaccine" before the former undisputed mid- dleweight ultimately passed away.
"A real true warrior Pray for the king and his family.. he’s in ICU fighting the after effects of the vaccine! He’ll be just fine but we could use the positive energy and Prayer for his Full Recovery!" Hearns wrote.
Hours after Hearns shared the post asking for prayers, Hagler’s wife Kay announced that one of the best middleweight fighters of all-time had died. Kay Ha- gler revealed the update in a Facebook post and did not im- mediately mention the cause of death.
Hearns’ post sparked anti-vaccine messages on so- cial media even though the cause of Hagler’s death was not revealed.
In a subsequent posted on his Instagram Stories, Hearns clarified that he was- n’t trying to make an anti-vac- cine message.
"Allow us to have our peace. Our love and respect to Marvin and his family, this is not an anti vaccine campaign ... It’s outrageous to have that in mind during the passing of a King, Legend, Father, Hus- band and so much more," Hearns wrote.
