Artist Creates Historic Sculpture For C. Blythe Andrews, Jr. Library
   If you happen to walk by the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Li- brary’s garden, you might see something new.
A beautiful bronze sculp- ture of two young black chil- dren holding a book that opens the world to them as they explore the pages. The striking piece was designed and created by McArthur Freeman, MFA.
Professor Freeman is an Associate Professor of An- imation and Digital Model- ing at the University of South Florida (USF). The title of the piece is “An Open Book.”
Prof. Freeman used 3D digital technology along with traditional sculpting tech- niques. Using CNC routing, a computer-controlled cutting machine, and a 3D printer to develop the physical struc- ture, he then cast the work of

According to a press re-
lease, Prof. Freeman states, “With the sculpture, I wanted to create an experi- ence that reflects on the An- drews legacy, while also projecting a message about innocence and Black human- ity.”
Professor Freeman’s
major goal is to enhance his daily practice in his artwork so he can continue to grow as an artist, learn, and take on new challenges. He also wants his work to become a legacy for the Black commu- nity specifically, and other communities as well.
Professor Freeman is the son of Belva Collins and McArthur Freeman, Sr., and he and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth Hordge-Free- man have two children.

Although Professor Freeman is involved in ani- mation and digital art, this
was his first sculpture.
His love of art started
early. He was a painter and drawer for many years, tutor- ing kids in both creative out- lets.
He is a native Floridian and graduated from the Uni- versity of Florida. He re-
ceived his Master in Fine Art (MFA) in Studio Art at Cor- nell University where he fo- cused on painting. He later went back for a second MFA and Design (MAD) with a concentration in Animation and New Media at North Carolina State University, in
