Issues, Move Forward
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In recent weeks, Hillsbor- ough Community College Pres- ident, Dr. Ken Atwater, has been under fire. On Wednes- day, the college’s Board of Trustees told him to devise a plan to address the concerns about his position.
Earlier this year, the Fac- ulty United Service Association conducted a survey requesting union members to share their opinion about Dr. Atwater. Approximately 147 of 179 members of the union issued a “no-confidence” vote and criti- cized his leadership. All of the faculty are not union members.
During a telephone inter- view with the Sentinel, Dr. Atwater said, “I am engaged and my leadership team is en- gaged. I am committed and I plan to address those concerns and issues. I’m committed to moving forward, working through the issues and chal- lenges and continuing to im- prove our student success.”
Dr. Atwater further stated that while 149 out of 174 union members gave him a

vote of no confidence, that number is misleading because there are approximately 323 faculty members and the oth- ers either gave him a vote of confidence or didn’t vote at all.
However, he stated that his is devising a plan to become even more committed and more engaged.
Dr. Atwater was chosen to replace the late Dr. Gwen- dolyn Stephenson and as- sumed the duties of president on July 1, 2010.
Dr. Atwater is currently in contract negotiations.
