It is felt having a grocery store in the Channelside area will draw more residents and retailers, and that’s been the vision of Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik when he committed $1 billion to redeveloping the area.
The new store will be built at East Twiggs and Meridian, will be 38,233 square-feet, and have rooftop parking.
Officials with the Tampa Housing Authority (THA) had been negotiating with Publix to open a new store as part of the Encore project.
However, Encore resident and THA Board Member, Billi Grif- fin, said they had second thoughts, and pulled out of the deal.
“The majority of the residents of Encore don’t have easy trans- portation to get to Channelside to shop, and that will be a hardship. Most of us have to ride buses, and we go to the Publix Store on Ne- braska Avenue near Hanna. Residents with cars prefer shopping at the Walmart Store on Kennedy Boulevard in Hyde Park.”
Ms. Griffin said the proposed store for Channelside is not ac- cessible for the residents of Encore.
