Hillsborough County School Board Approves A 30-Day Mask Mandate
At Wednesday’s Emer- gency School Board Meeting (August 18th), the Hillsbor- ough County School Board voted to mandate face cover- ings for all students, teach- ers, and staff with a medical exemption opt-out effective for 30 days, beginning Thursday, August 19, and running through Friday, Sep- tember 17.
After consulting with their public health partners from the Florida Department of Health-Hillsborough, Tampa General Hospital, and USF Health, and after thoughtful discussion, the Hillsborough County School Board voted 5-2 in favor of
the mandate. Members Melissa Snively and Stacy Hahn were not in favor of the mandate.
COVID-19 is having a tremendous impact on the entire community. School district staff is doing all they can to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
At this time, less than 1% of the district’s current stu- dent and staff population in Hillsborough County Public Schools have reported a pos- itive COVID case. As of Wednesday morning, the im- pact on schools is as follows: 10,384 students, or 4.8% of the total student population, are in isolation or quaran-
tine; 338 employees, or 1.4 % of the total employee count, are in isolation or quaran- tine.
Isolation refers to indi- viduals who have tested pos- itive. Quarantine refers to those who have had close contact with a positive case as defined by the CDC.
Students who have a medical exemption to the face covering mandate must submit medical documenta- tion from a licensed health care provider that the stu- dent has a medical, physical, or psychological condition that prevents the student from being able to safely wear a face covering.
