Chicago Bulls guard Dwyane Wade believes that no matter how many dif- ferent things LeBron James accomplishes in his career, trying to surpass Michael Jordan's legacy is a fool's errand.
"No, it's not possible," Wade told ESPN with a laugh. "It's not possible."
Wade is in a unique po- sition within the context of the comparisons between James and Jordan. He won two of his three NBA championships playing alongside James -- one of his closest friends -- with the Miami Heat. As a kid grow- ing up in the Chicago area, Wade was a Bulls fan and watched Jordan rack up six championships, earning the respect of millions around the globe.
As close as LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are, Wade says it’s just “not possible” for LeBron to surpass Michael Jordan’s legacy.
"The only thing you can do is tie it," Wade said. "There's no 19th hole."
The golf reference came about after Wade was re- minded of a 2012 interview with ESPN in which he used a golf analogy to compare James to Jordan.
"I don't know if [James]
has the ability to surpass him or not," Wade said at the time. "That's yet to be seen. My version as LeBron being on par with Michael is this: They're both on the golf course. Michael's on the 18th hole; LeBron is some- where on like the fourth hole. He's got a long way to go, but he's on par to get to the 18th hole.
"I think everyone knows that [James] is a phenome- nal, phenomenal player. He's one that we haven't seen, with the makeup of a 6-8 guy who runs as fast as any point guard, jumps as high as any center, and has the ability that he has to do so many things. But Michael Jor- dan is the greatest player of all time, that's who everyone shoots for. So it's going to be hard to surpass that."
Derrick Rose Misses Preseason Game Due To Rape Lawsuit Trial
Play With Phil Mickelson
Knicks point guard Der- rick Rose missed Satur- day's preseason home opener against the Brooklyn Nets because of his civil trial in Los Angeles over allega- tions that he and two friends raped a woman.
Rose remained in Los Angeles over the weekend and has been away from the team since Thursday, the second day of the trial.
It is unclear if Rose will play in Monday's preseason game against the Washing- ton Wizards, but head coach Jeff Hornacek said it is unlikely at this point. Rose's trial is scheduled to resume Tuesday.
"It's pretty difficult to go back and forth for one game and then go right back and then come back for a game. So he's just going to take care of that and then come back,"
DERRICK ROSE
Hornacek said.
Rose testified Friday in
the trial, saying he inter- preted a text message from the woman who alleges that Rose and his two friends raped her as consent to have sex with her later that night. Their text message exchange in August 2013 started with a text from the woman to Rose, saying he was the rea- son she "wakes up horny." She included a photo of her-
self in her nightshirt and continued the exchange with other texts about sex throughout the day, he testi- fied.
Rose said Friday he sur- mised that the initial text had triggered consent from that point on, and he said his assumption was reinforced by their sexual history, sex acts she engaged in with him and one of his friends that night at his house, and an in- vitation hours later to her apartment.
"I was assuming that all of us going over there that she wanted to have sex with all of us," Rose testified.
It is unclear if Rose will continue to testify when the trial resumes Tuesday. In ad- dition to missing Saturday's game, Rose also has missed two team practices while at- tending trial.
In Thursday Return
Tiger Woods is return- ing to the PGA Tour on Thurs- day in the opening round of the Safeway Open, he'll do so alongside longtime rival Phil Mickelson, according to two sources.
The 14-time major winner will kick off the 2016-17 sea- son at Silverado Resort and Spa's North Course in Napa, California, where he'll be playing in a PGA Tour event for the first time since he fin- ished tied for 10th at the Wyn- dham Championship in August 2015.
Woods committed to the Safeway Open on Friday. He has been on the mend since undergoing two back surger- ies in September and October of 2015.
Sunday's news of the Woods-Mickelson pairing was previously reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The tournament also an- nounced that one of Woods' pro-am partners on Wednes- day will be Golden State War-
PHIL MICKELSON And TIGER WOODS
riors superstar Stephen Curry, who is known to have a strong game on the course, too.
When news first broke of Woods' return in September, Mickelson said that he would like to play with Woods during the tourna- ment.
"I'm hoping we can get paired together [at the Safe- way Open]. That would be re- ally fun," Mickelson told ESPN.com last month. "I would love it. It's great to have him back, and hopefully he's physically able to practice the way he needs.''
