Debate Between VP Pence And Sen. Harris Gives Viewers Different Perspective
BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
When Vice President Mike Pence and Vice Presidential Candidate, Senator Kamala Harris took to the stage last Wednesday, viewers knew that they would bring a more civil debate than what was seen the week before. But then those watching wondered if they would discuss in length the is- sues or skirt around them with vague answers.
Here are comments of how some Sentinel readers viewed the debate.
DR. SAMUEL L. WRIGHT, JR.
“I attended the debate watch party at Dr. Joan Holmes’ abode, and I was a proud brother to see that Sen- ator Kamala Harris proudly represented the “Di- vine 9,” but more importantly,
she represented herself well. “She proved to the Ameri- can people that she not only is vice presidential material, but could easily ascend to the presidency, if necessary. She is professional, informed, and in my daughter’s vernacular-- classy. She did a superb job in answering most of the ques- tions and when she did, she
backed them up with facts. “We all wondered what took Joe Biden so long to make his selection, but in my opinion, he wanted to vet each candidate thoroughly and be- lieve you me, he selected one who is strong in every sense of the word. She did not appear to be an angry Black woman. Nor is she a pushover and did not let Vice President Pence deter her from remaining fo- cused and thorough in her re- sponses. Kamala Harris is a great choice for Vice President —VOTE now to send the BIDEN/HARRIS team to the WHITE HOUSE with a
one-way, non-stop ticket!”
REV. WILLIE G. DIXON
“It is my opinion Vice Pres- ident Mike Pence and Sena- tor Kamala Harris came to
the debate with the same goals in mind. Vice President Pence had the impossible task of defending the actions and lack of actions of President Donald Trump in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, increas- ing the economy for middle in- come workers, disbanding the Affordable Health Care Act, and keeping our communities and country safe.
“However, Vice Presi- dent Pence failed to defend the unnecessary deaths of over 212,000 American citizens to a pandemic created by Presi- dent Trump, when he re- fused to follow the plans of CDC, disease experts and abol- ishing the department estab- lished by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
“On the other hand, Sena- tor Kamala Harris had the responsibility of proving for- mer Vice President Joe Biden will improve the econ- omy for all citizens, listen to the medical experts, solve the COVID-19 Pandemic, create new jobs, continue the Afford- able Health Care Act, work with members of both political parties, reduce taxes for mid- dle and low-income families while increasing the taxes of big businesses and the wealthy, improve racial rela- tionships, while making all communities and our nation safe.
“Both candidates avoided several questions asked by the Moderator Sally Page prior to answering them. Vice President Pence failed to follow the two minute rule and rudely interrupted Senator Harris which duplicated the lack of respect as displayed by
President Trump during his debate with Vice President Biden. Senator Harris was very diplomatic, poised and on one occasion put Pence in his place, while ex- hibiting strength and control as a strong Black woman for other women to follow.
“Finally, Pence and Har- ris had the responsibility to prove to the American people they had the background, knowledge and mental capac- ity to serve as the next presi- dent of the United States of America.”
DR. JOAN HOLMES
“Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking.”
“Dr. W. E. B. Dubois in his classic 1903 book entitled, “Souls of Black Folks,” focused a chapter on double conscious- ness. It is a color line theory that explains how Blacks are forced to navigate the system in a dominate white culture.
“That’s what Senator Ka- mala Harris eloquently and skillfully displayed while de- bating VP Pence. She knew she could never tell him “shut up man,” like VP Biden told Trump when he constantly interrupted him during their debate. Senator Harris smiled and reminded women who were screaming at the TV about their experience with
