Roethlisberger Has Surgery To Repair Torn Meniscus; Timetable Uncertain
Cam Newton, Panthers Face Long Odds To Return To Playoffs After Loss To Saints
Pittsburgh Steelers star quarterback Ben Roethlis- berger has a torn meniscus in his left knee and had sur- gery Monday morning.
There's no timetable on his return, but he is expected to miss at least next Sunday's game against the New Eng- land Patriots, according to the source.
Roethlisberger was sidelined with 8:18 left in the first half of Pittsburgh's 30-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins after running a bootleg away from Dolphins defensive end Mario Williams, who ap- peared to nick Roethlis- berger's leg as the QB made his way out of the pocket.

after the game that he "felt something funny in my knee," prompting a trip to the locker room. Upon first evaluation, the team doctor thought Roethlisberger's leg had hyperextended from the con- tact, said Roethlisberger, who also has bruising in his right knee from a separate, late-game collision.
The return of quarterback Cam Newton from the con- cussion protocol wasn’t enough to salvage the Car- olina Panthers’ season.
Newton did all he could, mind you, rallying the Pan- thers from a 21-0 deficit to knot the score at 38-38 with 2:58 remaining.
But in the end, Carolina needed a secondary, not the NFL MVP, as it had no an- swer for New Orleans quar- terback Drew Brees in Sunday's 41-38 loss to the Saints.
The loss dropped the de- fending NFC champions to 1- 5 heading into their bye
Seahawks' Michael Bennett Calls Out Falcons' Jake Matthews Over Cut Block
Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett left Sun- day's game with a knee in- jury after a cut block from Falcons lineman Jake Matthews.
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett was on the receiving end of a cut block by Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews and suffered a right knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday's game.
Afterwards, he took excep- tion with Matthews.
"If you're big in the NFL, you just line up and play," Bennett said. "Why do you have to cut somebody on the f- --ing play?
"That s--- is just stupid. Why cut somebody when you can just line up and win? I mean, I don't know. I don't come off the ball jumping at offensive linemen's legs...I just think it's a b-----a-- move, per- sonally."
The play Bennett de- scribed occurred in the third quarter when Matt Ryan found Mohamed Sanu for a 10-yard touchdown. Bennett went to the ground and clutched the back of his right knee. He went into the locker room and did not return.
Bennett said afterwards that the knee injury is "noth- ing major" and he should be able to play next week.
Added Pete Carroll, "A lit- tle sore, but we think he's ok. A little sore knee. We'll see what happens here in the next couple days."

week. No team that started 1- 5 or worse after reaching the Super Bowl has made the playoffs.
The disappointment was most noticeable during Newton's 90-second post-
game press conference in which he answered nine questions with short, pointed answers. It was eerily similar to his press conference fol- lowing a loss to Denver in Super Bowl 50, except New- ton was given permission from a member of his public relations staff to leave this one.
“We’ve just got to find ways to win football games,'' Newton said several times.
The Panthers are 0-3 in the NFC South and looking nothing like the team that ran through the league a year ago en route to a 15-1 regu- lar-season record.

Chant 'USA' Before He Kneels
Before San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaeper- nick knelt during the na- tional anthem of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills, a loud chant of "USA, USA" rang out at New Era Field.
Some interpreted the chants as questioning Kaepernick's patriotism for his protest of racial inequality and oppression in the United States. It was an implication Kaepernick vehemently dis- agreed with after San Fran- cisco's 45-16 loss.
"I don't understand what's un-American about fighting for liberty and justice for everybody, for the equality this country says it stands for," Kaepernick said. "To me, I see it as very patriotic and American to uphold the United States to the standards that it says it lives by."

Kaepernick on Sunday knelt during the anthem for the first time as a starting quarterback before a regular- season game; he was again joined by safety Eric Reid and linebacker Eli Haroldin supporting the cause.
Safeties Antoine Bethea and Jaquiski Tartt, corner- backs Keith Reaser and Rashard Robinson and running back Mike Davis continued their tradition of raising their right fists during "The Star-Spangled Banner."
On his best statistical day as a professional, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., still had to sweat out the Baltimore Ravens' final drive.
Sunday could have ended on a sour note if the Giants' defense hadn't made one final stop in a 27-23 victory. Beck- ham was flagged for an un- sportsmanlike conduct penalty for taking off his hel- met while celebrating on the field after the 66-yard touch- down that gave New York the lead.

"I'm very thankful that the penalty on that didn't cost us in the end," Beckham said.
Olympic Sprinter’s Teen Daughter Killed In Drive-By Shooting
SWAC Issues 1-Game Suspension Against Officiating Crew
The teen daughter of Olympian Tyson Gay was tragically killed early Sunday morning after a shooting out- side of a Lexington, Ky., restaurant, according to USA Today High School Sports.
Trinity Gay, 15, a tal- ented sprinter in her own right, was taken to a Univer- sity of Kentucky hospital with a gunshot wound to her neck around 3:30 a.m. She died shortly thereafter.
Police say two cars outside of the Cook Out restaurant exchanged fire and then drove away. Trinity was not in either car, police said. Tyson Gay told WLEX on Sunday morning that he is at the airport and on his way to Lexington, Ky.
“She didn’t make it,” Tyson Gay said. “I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.”

Black College sports is im- portant to many schools’ sur- vival, so when an officiating crew makes a huge mistake the Conference leadership was not afraid to take action.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference has announced the suspension of the on-field officiating crew following the Alabama State-Prairie View A&M game on Saturday, Oc- tober 8.
The announcement follows the league’s thorough review of the game footage.
SWAC Coordinator of Offi- cials Harold Mitchell handed the entire officiating crew a one-game suspension to be enforced during Week 8.
The error occurred during the first overtime period in which the officials awarded Prairie View A&M a touch- down on a 13-yard run. Dur-
ing the run, the ball carrier fumbled the ball, stepped out of bounds and then recovered the ball while it was still in the field of play prior to re-estab- lishing his position in the field of play.
After review, the ball should have been placed at the one-yard line where the player first recovered the ball while out of bounds resulting in a dead ball and a first-and-goal.
“This entire crew accepts responsibility for each play. We have taken this action be- cause there must be account- ability in our officiating program,” SWAC Commis- sioner Duer Sharp said. “Our member institutions ex- pect the highest level of offici- ating and it is the responsibility of the confer- ence office to make sure those expectations are met.”

ington, KY., her father’s alma mater. She was a state run- ner-up in middle school in the 100 meters. More re- cently, she was the Region 6AAA champion in the 200 meters last spring.
She is the daughter of Gay and mother Shoshana Boyd.
Authorities reportedly have two people who are per- sons of interest in the case; they also have a car that matches the description of one of the vehicles involved.
