Last Friday, at 12 noon, the candidate qualifying pe- riod closed in Hillsborough County for the upcoming elections. As a result, 171 can- didates have officially quali- fied.
Craig Latimer, Hills- borough County Supervisor of Elections said, “This is an important day because we now know who will be on our Primary Election ballot.”
The offices in which can- didates have qualified in Hillsborough County are: Sheriff, County Commission, School Board, County Court Judge, Soil and Water Con- servation Districts, Commu- nity Development Districts and Special Taxing Districts.
Candidates for federal, state and multi-county of- fices qualify with the State and are found on the Florida Division of Elections website.
They include candidates for U. S. Senator, U. S. Rep- resentative, Governor, Attor- ney General, Chief Financial Officer, Commissioner of Agriculture, State Senator, State Representative, Supreme Court Justice, Dis- trict Court of Appeal and Cir- cuit Judge.
The “Qualified” status for candidates is not official until the Notice of Ballot Certifica- tion is issued by the Depart- ment of State (no later than 7 days after the close of quali- fying). Qualified candidates who are unopposed will not appear on the ballot and shall be declared nominated for office, as per Florida law (FS 101.252).

and absent military voters who have requested Vote By Mail: July 13;
Ballots mailed to domes- tic voters who have requested Vote By Mail: Beginning July 24;

Deadline to register or change party affiliation: July 30 (postmarked or delivered by close of business).
Early Voting for the Pri- mary Election will begin on August 13th and end on Au- gust 26th. It will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The Primary Election will take place on August 28, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
The Vote By Mail dead- line is no later than 7 p.m., on August 28th.
NOTE: Voters who normally cast ballots at C. Blythe Andrews, Jr., Library can vote at the Cyrus Greene Commu- nity Center, 2101 E. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., Tampa, 33603.
By mid-July, voters will be able to view a sample bal- lot at VoteHillsborough.org and see which races will be on their Primary ballot.
Primary ballots are based on the districts you live in and party affiliation. Florida has closed primaries, so vot- ers must be registered with a political party to vote in that party’s Primary Election.
All voters, whether affili- ated with a party or not, will vote on nonpartisan races (including school board and judges) and Universal Pri- mary Contests, which occur when all candidates in a race have the same party affilia- tion and the winner will be unopposed in the General Election.
“I want to remind voters that some school board and judges races could be decided during the Primary Election, and those are nonpartisan races that will be on every- one’s ballot,” Latimer said.
Voters may change their party at any time, but to be valid for the upcoming pri- mary, the change must be made by July 30, which is also the deadline to register to vote for the Primary Elec- tion.
For more information on candidates and elections is available at www.VoteHills- borough.org.
