Rep. Castor Plays Softball For Local Cancer Survivor
 BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Congresswoman Kathy Castor put in a little practice time in Tampa ear- lier last week on the softball field at the University of South Florida. That was be- fore heading to Washington, D. C. She joined other women of Congress in a softball game on Wednes- day.
The 10th Annual Con- gressional Women’s softball game was held Wednesday evening. The women of Congress (Democrats and Republicans) took on the women of the D. C. Press Corps. Rep. Castor has played in all 10 games.
The purpose of the game is to raise funds and aware- ness for breast cancer among young women.
The event raised $320,000 for the Young Survival Coalition, but the Congressional women lost the game 5-0 to the Press Corps.
“Each year I honor a Tampa area woman who has faced breast cancer by dedi- cating the game to her. This

why I want people to know about my fight and hear my testimony, and I am grateful to Congresswoman Cas- tor for her tireless advo- cacy.”
LeJean is the mother of a daughter and son, 19 and 23, respectively, and has worked for Hillsborough County Public Schools for 20 years, currently as a kindergarten teacher’s aide at Just Elementary. LeJean lost her own mother to breast cancer in 1993 when LeJean was in her early 20s and her mother was 43.
In 2016, U. S. Rep. Cas-
tor introduced the biparti- san Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act, and this week, U. S. Rep. Castor plans to join her colleague, U. S. Rep. Peter King (NY2), to introduce the bi- partisan Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act. The bill would waive the ar- bitrary five-month waiting period before women devas- tated with metastatic breast cancer can enroll for Social Security Disability Insur- ance and the 24-month waiting period before they can enroll for Medicare ben- efits.
year, I am proud to play in honor of LeJean Michelle Miller, who is bravely bat- tling cancer for the fifth time. LeJean is an inspira- tion, first taking cancer head-on at age 30 and standing strong against it ever since. Her motto sums up her determination to beat cancer: ‘keep fighting – cancer is not the end.’ She is not just a cancer survivor, but a cancer warrior.”
The daughter of Hills- borough County Commis-
sioner Les Miller, LeJean is U. S. Rep. Cas- tor’s “Survivor Connection” for the 2018 Congressional Women’s Softball Game. She has battled can- cer multiple times and in multiple forms since she was first diagnosed in 2001.
“There is hope to survive cancer with new treatments, increased access to medical care, more awareness and keeping the conversation at the forefront,” LeJean said in a press release. “That’s
