Woman Jailed For Damaging Graves In Historic Cemetery
A 35-year-old homeless woman was arrested for damaging several graves in a historic cemetery. The inci- dent took place around 4:30 p.m., Tuesday.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, Ms. Channon Marie Clarkson entered the Unity African Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, 1013 W. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., in Seffner. A church employee observed her roaming around the ceme- tery. She then pulled two headstones up from the ground, police said.
Ms. Clarkson is alleged to have removed engraved templates from several grave sites as well. When deputies arrived and located her, they found several items in her purse that she had taken from other graves, including angels and flower holders,

police said.
Deputies spoke with the
pastor and church leaders and it was determined that this was not hate-crime re- lated. Ms. Clarkson is homeless, and is believed to suffer from a mental illness, police said.
The church, which has been in Seffner for 126 years, is still trying to determine the

total amount of the damage. It is estimated to exceed $5,000.
Ms. Clarkson was charged with removing, dis- figuring, destroying or injur- ing a tomb. She was also charged with grand theft. Her bond was set at $4,000 and she is currently being held in the Hillsborough County jail.
