Shuffle Step- lateral, forward, back
The ability to shuffle step is critical to skill development. When moving laterally for short distances,
which is most of the movements in volleyball, the shuffle step is a primary form of movement. For
longer distances, turning the hips and running is a better option.
Sample Activity
Athlete performs shuffle step in four directions
Right foot forward
Left foot forward
Athlete performs a block shuffle step to the right and left
Shuffle step laterally/forward/backward to receive a serve
Shuffle step to cones on the court, forward/back/right/left
Shuffle step to a forearm pass/overhead pass
Checklist
Head stay level during movement
Weight is balanced, center of gravity at body
midline
Keep feet shoulder width apart as athlete
moves
Keep distance moving from 3-6 feet, generally,
the athlete will not move a greater distance
than this when playing, also with longer
distance, the form is compromised.
Athlete should be proficient with right foot lead
or the left foot lead
