A guide to places of Sussex and the wonderful landscapes to enjoy there.
Southern Tracks, Trails & Twittens is a walkers guide that explores southern parts of the Sussex landscape,
from the edge of the sandstone High Weald, where the 16th century iron industry ruled the day, across the great
domes of the South Downs extolled by writers and artists, to the fertile agricultural western coastal plain.
The early people of Sussex, from Neolithic times, tilled the soil and left field systems, burial mounds and
earthworks. Drovers forged routes into the Weald from the coast. Romans built castles, villas and roads that
remain to this day: later invaders caused mayhem, built more fortifications, whilst taking stock of their
acquisitions. As the villages and towns of Sussex evolved the footpaths, bridleways and deep holloways were
the earthen connective network for people in their workaday lives. Land was farmed, markets traded, even the
rivers were highways, all joined by a cat’s cradle of tracks and trails this book sets out to explore. There were
rebels too, taking on injustice, creating a stir, Sussex people not being druv – walk with them in this book.
Edward Start is a life-long Sussex resident, he has explored the county all his life, led guided walks in the UK
and abroad and published over 250 walks in the local press. His interests are the landscape and the past
peoples who have made Sussex the place it is.
