quote always comes to mind as I watched how we teach our youth to play volleyball. Age group
coaches practice plan often includes a little of this, followed by a bit of that, hoping the player will
somehow stumble their way to improvement.
I compare this unfocused variety of methods used with teaching volleyball to the medical world,
where there is a consistency of process based upon tried-and-true methods. Hospitals require the
use of a checklist, ensuring nothing is left to chance as being overlooked or insufficiently
emphasized. Coaching an 11-year-old is does not replicate preparation for surgery. But coaching
that 11-year-old can seem as complicated as a surgical procedure. Coaches should take great pains
to be equally conscientious with the players in their charge.
In this book, I want to present a plan for teaching our sport. Using the checklist approach, I want to
organize how we teach the game's movements, skills, and systems. We will start with the beginning
players, proceed through the intermediate stage, and finish with the advanced play levels. This book
will be a roadmap to allow athletes the best opportunity to develop their skills and gain maximum
enjoyment of the sport.
