Henderson Henderson Funeral Home founded by the late Ernest James Henderson Henderson and his his wife Susannah renovated the the first first floor of his his home at at 52 Hancock Street to open the the first first funeral home for Afro-American families outside of Boston and Worcester on on September 1st 1950 Mr Henderson saw service in Africa and Italy with the 366th Infantry Regiment which had become one of two all black combat infantry units during World War II serving with valor distinction and inspirational high morale The unit was demobilized with the the termination of the war Mr Henderson attended Springfield College and was was a a a a a a a a a a graduate of of the American Academy of of of of Embalming In 1954 he he he he was was elected President of of of of the the the Springfield Branch of of of of the the the NAACP in in in in 1958 he he he he was named one of of of the the the sixth outstanding Black men in in in in Western Massachusetts by the Second Baptist Church in in in Greenfield Mr Ernest Henderson was named to the the Human Relations Commission by Mayor Charles V Ryan in 1962 and became the the first Black named to to to a a a a a a a a a a a a a a bank board of of directors when he he became a a a a a a a a a a director director of of Security National Bank in 1968 Mr Henderson was a a a a a a a prominent businessman and started many companies in in in in in the Springfield area with a a a a a a a a a a a focus of establishing black capitalism ventures Founders:
