 About Us
H. M. Huskilsons Funeral Homes and Crematorium Limited had its modest beginnings in 1878 near Lockeport, Shelburne County. Elendur Huskilson was an Icelandic immigrant and carpenter by trade. He started making caskets for his community, free of charge, as a thankful gesture towards the people who welcomed him to his new home. His son, Lewis Huskilson followed in his father’s footsteps and opened a funeral home in Lockeport in 1909.
After the second World War, Lewis’ son Harold, graduate of Mount Allison University, assisted his father in the funeral business. Harold went on to graduate from Renouards College of Embalming in New York City in 1946. Harold, now a licenced funeral director and embalmer, opened a funeral home in Shelburne upon his return in 1947.
In 1952 Harold, his wife Elsie and their children Elizabeth and Clifford moved to Yarmouth after the accidental death of their four-year old son, Teddy. It was in that year that Harold opened another funeral home and ambulance service at 476 Main Street. After some luck and prosperity, the new facility was built in 1967 at 29 Albert Street, where the business remains today. The entire Yarmouth facility was renovated in 1993. At this time a second, larger chapel (Veterans Memorial Chapel) as well as a crematorium were added. Harold opened his fourth funeral home in 1969 in the fishing community of Wedgeport, Yarmouth County, where he subsequently built a new building in 1971.
The ambulance service was based out of the Yarmouth funeral home from 1952-1996. Huskilson’s Ambulance and Sweeny’s Ambulance merged to form Yarmouth and District Ambulance Service. They operated for five years under the combined guidance of
