At the turn of the century it was moved by barge across the creek to its current location. The living room served two purposes: as a chapel and as a family retreat. The family, needless to say, became quite skilled in furniture moving. In 1953, reflecting growing service to the community, the building was altered with living quarters being moved to the second floor and three permanent chapels being established on the ground floor. Ten years later a wing was added, providing two additional large chapels and office space.
Now five chapels are available to serve the families of the South Shore of Long Island. The funeral home, characterized by its home-like atmosphere, informal furniture arrangement, and tasteful lighting and decor, is also known widely for the beauty of its grounds. Changes in the seasons can be identified by observing the profusion of flowers and shrubs skillfully and generously placed around the building and walks. In addition, seasonal flowers adorn the hallways.
From the start the Overton Funeral Home has been a community leader. Art “Doc” Overton was a founding member of the Islip Chamber of Commerce in 1923. For years the Overton Funeral Home has made donations to countless civic organizations and endeavors, as well as provide a scholarship to a graduating senior of Islip High School.
The Overton Family is personally involved with various organizations and groups within the community, and the funeral home is a proud sponsor of local programs and charities.
As a business, the funeral home belongs to the Islip Chamber of Commerce, the Nassau- Suffolk Funeral Directors Association, the New York State Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association. The funeral home is a regular supporter of North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital, our local branches of the American Legion,
