Roles and Responsibilities of the Steering Committee
1. Participate actively
a. Have a strong pattern of attendance.
i. Attend 5 Steering Committee meetings per year, one of which is a half- to full-day planning session;
ii. Attend FGLN Community Connection Sessions; and
iii. Participate in strategic planning – every several years, an in-depth
strategic planning process is conducted which often requires extra time
from the steering committee.
b. Prepare for meetings by reading through materials in advance of meetings
c. Be proactive in bringing pertinent ideas/items to the attention of the Executive
Director and Steering Committee.
2. Avoid Conflict of Interest and Ensure Confidentiality
a. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive topics.
b. Speak for the FGLN only when authorized or appropriate.
c. Disclose possible conflicts and refrain from voting when appropriate; complete
an annual conflict of interest survey.
3. Exercise Leadership
a. Serve the FGLN as a whole rather than any specific interest groups or
constituencies.
b. Ensure the FGLN’s strategic priorities respond to critical issues that advance our
community.
c. Participate in the annual assessment of the steering committee’s performance.
d. Undertake special assignments and/or leadership positions.
e. Be familiar with the FGLN’s operating budget in order to help strengthen the
sustainability of the Network.
f. Serve as an advisory committee for the Literacy for Life Fund, a grantmaking
committee of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
g. Work with Executive Director to secure adequate resources needed to scale
and sustain the Literacy Network.
4. Serve as an Ambassador
a. Be articulate about the FGLN’s mission and strategic priorities.
b. Help identify people of achievement and credibility who can serve on the
steering committee and reflect the full diversity of our community.
c. Attend FGLN events and encourage others to do so.
d. Share FGLN’s communications and social media content as appropriate.
