16mm. Colour movie film of July 1962 Centenary Derby School Cadet Corps Parade on Parker’s Piece. This was found in its original 16 mm. state in the archives within Derby Moor Community Sports College. This has now been professionally converted into both a DVD and onto two ‘memory sticks’. Sadly in 1962 it was created without any sound track which was a sad omission.
We are however considering whether there is sufficient interest in it being placed on sale with all profits going into Society funds? A secondary thought is that as we have uncovered dozens of ex OTC, JTC and CCF cadets, that for a Society we could organise a special showing of the DVD to everyone connected with the OD Society and Derby School pupils who did not join the Society one evening in the early Spring? I would value your opinion on these two thoughts of mine.
The Jack Bussell collection As a result of the Bygones article on Thursday 17 December in the Derby Telegraph we received 15 previously unseen post cards, photographs and press cuttings that had been in the possession of Jack Bussell of Etwall. a relation of Andrew Bussell who helped to run the wholesale newspaper and magazine business of A.J. Bussell & Sons. One amazing press cutting was of His Royal Highness Prince George when he officially opened Darley Abbey Park on June 30th 1931. Made more interesting because the School’s OTC were asked to provide the official guard of honour. These are now all burnt and in our electronic archives.
See Derby Daily Telegraph press cutting in next column reporting Royal visit on 30 June 1931 to officially open Darley Park.
If one looks closely Prince George is accompanied by Major E.J. Gillard the CO to the CCF
Meeting of our Society Archive OD’s Thursday On 7 Jan 2016 Andrew Polkey, Maurice Cass and myself met formally and discussed our strategy for 2016 now that all the research is completed on the names on our War Memorial. We have several ideas to take the School’s history forward.
1. To consider an idea to digitalise all our 23 Volumes of The Derbeian, so they become searchable;
2. To fill in several missing links with the Cadet Corps History;
3. To continue scanning and listing of the remainder of the archives held at Derby Moor Community Sports College;
4. Asking the Committee’s thoughts upon starting a second volume of Tacchella 1902-1988. This is very much dependent on locating all the pupils’ registers.
