8. Start at either end of the line and tighten the knot around its heavy
core. Use a marlinespike, as shown, advancing the slack (seen here
looping upward) as you go. Work through the knot’s entire structure again
until you reach the third or middle turn of the five-part ring. Here, reserve
enough slack—about 18 inches—to form a loop; keep tightening the knot
on the other side of the loop.
