1. Lay open the rope for about 12 inches, and whip the throat and the
ends of the strands. Make a wall knot, and then fashion a crown
(preceding pages) directly on top of the wall. Leave each knot fairly
loose. Then take one strand (red) and tuck it back up through the knot
(arrow), following the lead of the nearest strand in the wall knot; the new
tuck will lie below the old lead and parallel to it.
2. Continue doubling the wall knot, tucking each strand in turn, in each
case following below and parallel to the original lead. Thus, in this
example, the red strand will follow the red lead, and the yellow strand the
yellow lead. End with the strands pointing upward; prepare to make the
first tuck for doubling the crown (arrow).
