Background information
WhatsApp Inc. was founded in 2009
by US citizens Brian Acton and Jan
Koum, both former employees of
Yahoo!, and is based in Mountain
View, California. The company is
currently in the process of takeover
after Facebook Inc. announced its
acquisition of WhatsApp Inc. on
February 19, 2014, for US$19 billion.
As of September 2014, WhatsApp
is the most globally popular
messaging app with 600 million
users.
LinkedIn is a business-oriented
social networking service. Founded
in December 2002 and launched on
May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for
professional networking. In 2006,
LinkedIn increased to 20 million
viewers. As of June 2013, LinkedIn
reports more than 259 million
acquired users in more than 200
countries and territories. The site is
available in 20 languages.
Facebook was founded on February
4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg
with his college roommates and
fellow Harvard University students.
Facebook had over one billion
active users as of September 2012.
By that point, Facebook was adding
about half a petabyte of data every
24 hours, amounting to about 180
petabytes per year.
