As an intellectual object, a publication is prototypically a makeup of such great length that it takes a
substantial investment of time to compose and a still significant, though not so extensive,
investment time to browse. In the restricted sense, a publication is a self-sufficient section or
portion of a longer article, a usage that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long works needed to be
written on many scrolls, and every scroll had to be identified by the book it included. Therefore, for
example, each component of Aristotles Physics is referred to as a book. In the unrestricted sense,
a publication is the compositional whole of which these sections, whether known as chapters or
books or components, are components.

The academic material in a tangible publication need not be a composition, nor even be called a
novel. Novels can consist only of drawings, engravings, or photographs, or such matters as
crossword puzzles or cut-out dolls. In a physical book, the pages can be left blank or can contain
an abstract set of outlines as support for ongoing entrances, e.g., an account book, an
appointment book, an autograph book, a notebook, a journal, or a sketchbook. Some bodily
publications are made with pages thick and sturdy enough to support other physical items, like a
record or picture album. Books could be distributed in electronic form as e-books along with other
formats.

Although in ordinary academic parlance that a monograph is understood to be a professional
academic work, instead of a reference work on a single scholarly subject, in library and information
science monograph describes more broadly every non-serial publication complete in 1 volume
(book) or a finite number of volumes (even a novel like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost
Time), in contrast to serial publications like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. A shop where
books are bought and sold is a bookshop or bookstore. Novels are also sold elsewhere. Books can
also be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010, approximately 130,000,000
different titles were released. In some wealthier nations, the sale of printed books has diminished
because of the increased usage of e-books.

In the 2000s, due to the growth in availability of affordable handheld computing devices, the
opportunity to share texts through electronic means became an appealing alternative for media
publishers. Hence, the"e-book" was made. The expression e-book is a contraction of"digital book";
it refers to a book-length book in electronic form. An e-book is usually made accessible through the
world wide web, but also on CD-ROM along with other forms. E-Books might be read either using a
computing device with an LED screen such as a conventional computer, a smartphone or a tablet
computer; or by means of a mobile e-ink display device known as an e-book reader, such as the
Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo eReader, or even the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers
attempt to mimic the experience of reading a print publication by employing this technology, since
the screens on e-book readers are not as reflective.
