Dominion Mandate – man was designed and commanded by God to bring creation under his
stewardship for the glory of God.
Verse 31 should be enough to refute the idea of millions of years, as millions of years leave a trail of
disease, pain, suffering, and death. Why would God call that very good?
Genesis 2:1-3 – Day 7 Conclusion of creation, rest, and blessing
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of
2
them. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and
3
he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God
blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all
the work that he had done in creation. (ESV)
God’s creative process was concluded on Day 6 with man as the final created being. Some people say
that God is still creating today; however, these verses clarify that the creation is complete by this time.
We must remember that part of the creation is the divine insight that places within it the ability to
sustain itself. For instance, reproduction is not a creative process. Cells of the embryo are brought into
existence from pre-existing cells (one from the father and one from the mother). The reproduction
shows divine insight in helping the creation be sustainable.
Genesis 2:4-7 – The details of the creation of man
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that
5
the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no
small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and
there was no man to work the ground, and a mistwas going up from the land and was watering the
6
whole face of the ground— then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed
7
into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. (ESV)
This section of Scripture is a recap of Genesis 1:26-27. It provides more detail into the account. This
section also tells us what man’s purpose was – to till the ground. The idea here is not that God is
condoning tillage but rather that God is establishing man as the steward of His creation.
While both animals and man have nephesh, only man has the breath of God in him. God created a
special connection with man that he did not have with animals. This is important to remember today, as
many people would claim that animals have rights and are equal to humans. While animals are to be
treated humanely, they are not equal to man, and they do not share the same closeness with God that
man does. They are not eternal beings, and they are not given any commands of God other than to be
fruitful and multiply. God has a much more intimate relationship with man.
