leadership position? Notice that Nehemiah also brought attention to the fact that the king had also sent
infantry and cavalry officers with me. Nehemiah was pointed out from the very beginning of his arrival that he
would be a force to be reckoned with if these leaders wanted to oppose his efforts to seek the well-being of
the Israelites. Evidently, everyone knew the feelings of the old guard as Nehemiah went on to say that they
were greatly displeased.
Remember that in 2 Kings 17:24, the king of Assyria (Shalmaneser, 722 BC) brought people from Babylon,
Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the people of Israel.
“We know from the Elephantine papyri (AP 30) that Sanballat was the governor of the Persian province of

Samaria in 407 BC and had delegated his duties to his two sons.” This loss of power and the ongoing struggle
between the Jews and the Samaritans were well known, and this event intensified this struggle. This event
represented a new conquest of the land, and all hell was about to break out because someone had come to
seek the well-being of the Israelites.
