The Food and Drug Monitoring
Agency, together with the Directorate
General of Customs and Excise, has
halted the shipment of 430 cartons of
illegal traditional medicine with a total
weight of 5 tons. The traditional
medicine, which was intended to be
sent to Uzbekistan, contained
chemical substances.
There have been four traditional
products containing medicinal chemicals that have been confiscated, namely 200 cartons of Montalin,
50 cartons of Tawon Liar, 30 cartons of Ginseng Kianpi Pil, and 150 cartons of Samyunwan. The
Indonesian community is expected to be vigilant against the potential circulation of these traditional
medicines within the country.
Head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) Penny K Lukito expressed this in a press
conference related to the discovery of Traditional Medicine Products Containing Medicinal Chemical
Ingredients, on Wednesday (9/8/2023), at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Cargo Area, Tangerang,
Banten. The discovery of traditional medicines containing medicinal chemical ingredients is the result
of mapping areas and cyber investigations and intelligence activities conducted by BPOM.
"The discovery of traditional medicine containing chemical drugs is a cause for concern because
traditional medicine, such as jamu, is a flagship product of the nation. Of course, this can damage the
reputation of Indonesian jamu abroad. In addition, the addition of chemical drugs to traditional medicine
can be dangerous for health," he said.
Penny added, the illegal traditional medicine products that were successfully followed up by the BPOM
and Customs and Excise were already on the negative list of products that became a public warning
(public warning) because they contained medicinal chemicals. The types of medicinal chemicals added
to these traditional medicinal products include paracetamol, diclofenac sodium, caffeine and
cyproheptadine.
