1 Question Medications and HeaRt Valves fRoM Pigs

The Helsinki Conference was presented by a proposal for a study by
Dr. Yaakov Quint from the neonatology department. A summary of
the study is included herein. The topic seems important and vital to
us. As the law dictates, we intend to inform the parents of premature
babies to be included in the study of all the relevant information,
including the fact that the medication is made from lung tissues of a
pig. Since a sizable portion of the population we service are Orthodox
Jews, who stringently adhere to the laws of the Torah, we would like
to know the Rav’s opinion on this matter. If it seems correct to give a
permissive ruling, we can show it to all concerned.

To the honorable Rav,

Persuant to our conversation, below is a summary of the study.
Premature babies [born before the end of the eighth month of
pregnancy] are liable to suffer from a serious disease, sometimes fatal,
which involves severe difficulty in breathing. The disease is due to a
lack of a substance created in the lung, called a surfactant. The ac-
cepted treatment nowadays is the use of an artificial respirator. Some
