THREE LOVE POEMS BY CHILEAN POET PABLO NERUDA
Sonnet XVII from 100 Love Sonnets
I do not love you as if you were rose-tinted salt, a topaz, or a spray of carnations that would enflame the passions:
I love you as certain hidden things are loved, secretly, inwardly, between the shadow and the soul. I love you as
a plant that doesn’t bloom, but carries hidden within, the light of its flowers, and thanks to your love, love’s very
fragrance, risen from the earth, exists deep within me. I love you without knowing how, or when, or where, I love
you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride; I
love you because I cannot love otherwise, but this way,
so that I am not I nor you, so close that your hand on
my chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I
fall asleep. I love you, to begin to love you, to infinity
and to not stop loving you ever
A compilation poem
With your name on my mouth and a kiss that never
broke away from yours, then love knew it was called
love. And when I lifted my eyes to your name,
suddenly your heart showed me the way. Since then, I
am because you are, since then you are, I am, we are;
and through love I will be, you will be, we will be.
The Queen
I have named you queen. There are taller than you, taller. There are purer than you, purer. There are lovelier than
you, lovelier. But you are the queen. When you go through the streets no one recognizes you. No one sees your
crystal crown, no one looks at the carpet of red gold that you tread as you pass, the nonexistent carpet. And when
you appear all the rivers sound in my body, Bells Shake the sky, and a hymn fills the world. Only you and I, Only
you and I, my love. Listen to it.
Quote on Relativity Albert Einstein
Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love. How on earth can you explain in terms of
chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love? Put your hand on a stove for a minute
and it seems like an hour. Sit with that special someone for an hour and it seems like a minute. That's relativity.
