Straive | Redefining Your Peer Review Experience 21
High-performance JEO teams share certain traits, key among which is placing a high value
on customer service: whether communicating with authors, editors, or reviewers, these
teams want to ensure that scholars get a prompt, polite and informative response. The
second critical trait is an appreciation for continuous improvement. This is particularly
apparent in larger JEO teams handling large volumes of articles, where reducing errors,
simplifying complex processes, and reducing times from submission to acceptance can
make a significant difference to workloads as well as customer satisfaction. The third trait is
collaboration and knowledge sharing, both within the JEO and beyond to include the rest of
the publishing team, editors, and other stakeholders. Combined, these traits represent some
of the primary drivers for what are typically called Lean process improvements (6Sigma,
2017).
