A Cruise to Solomon’s Castle
th
Author: Dennis McKinley, On Saturday, October 11 , Edward O’Neal of the SW Healey group designed a lunch run in
conjunction with members of the British Car Club of Southwest Florida. We met at the RaceTrac gas station at I75 Exit
170 and King’s Highway at 10:30 for a 42-minute cruise to Solomon’s Castle and the Boat in the Moat restaurant for
lunch in Ona, Florida. The cruise was a scenic drive through the farms of Charlotte, DeSoto and Hendry counties!
There were 6 cars in our caravan with two people in each car, three Healeys, (two 3000s & one 100), one MGB, one
Triumph TR7 and one non-British car, (a Real Cool Genesis), due to their British car being worked on?
Howard Solomon, a sculptor, painter, author, builder of Castles and maker of dreams, shares his unique view of his hidden
world in the lush Florida woodlands.
For those who are not familiar with Solomon’s Castle, it was built by Howard as his home, his galleries and workshop,
which are open to the public. It is decorated with more than 80 interpretive stained-glass windows and countless metal
sculptures. You can tour the inside of the Castle, but you are not allowed to take photos.
We toured the grounds but decided not to go through the Castle.
