            Benefits of Reading

As an intellectual object, a publication is prototypically a composition of such great length that it
takes a substantial investment of time to compose and a still considerable, though not so
extensive, investment of time to browse. In the limited sense, a publication is a self explanatory
section or part of a longer composition, a use that reflects the simple fact that, in antiquity, long
works needed to be written on several scrolls, and each scroll had to be identified from the
publication it included. So, for instance, each component of Aristotles Physics is called a book. In
the unrestricted sense, a publication is the compositional whole of which these sections, whether
called books or chapters or parts, are parts.

The intellectual content in a tangible book does not need to be a composition, nor be called a
novel. Novels can consist just of drawings, engravings, or photographs, or such things as
crossword puzzles or cut-out dolls. At a physical book, the pages can be left blank or may feature
an abstract set of lines as service for ongoing entries, e.g., an account book, an appointment book,
an autograph book, a notebook, a journal, or a sketchbook. Some bodily books are created out of
pages thick and sturdy enough to encourage other physical objects, like a scrapbook or picture
album. Books could be distributed in electronic form as e-books along with other formats.

Although in ordinary academic parlance a monograph is understood to be a professional academic
work, instead of a reference work on a single scholarly topic, in library and information science
monograph denotes more broadly every non-serial publication complete in one volume (book) or a
finite number of volumes (even a publication like Prousts seven-volume In Search of Lost Time),
compared to serial publications like a magazine, journal, or newspaper. Novels can also be sold
everywhere. Books may also be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010,
roughly 130,000,000 distinct titles were published. In some wealthier countries, the selling of
published books has diminished due to the increased usage of e-books.

In the 2000s, as a result of rise in availability of cheap handheld computing devices, the
opportunity to share texts through electronic means became an appealing alternative for media
publishers. The term e-book is a contraction of"electronic book"; it pertains to a book-length
publication in electronic form. An e-book is generally made accessible through the internet, but
also on CD-ROM along with other forms. E-Books might be read either via a computing device with
an LED screen like a conventional computer, a smartphone or a tablet computer; or by means of a
portable e-ink display device called an e-book reader, such as the Sony Reader, Barnes & Noble
Nook, Kobo eReader, or the Amazon Kindle. E-book readers attempt to mimic the experience of
reading a print book by using this technology, because the displays onto e-book readers are not as
            reflective.
