The first golf balls were hard wooden round balls used between the 14th and 17th centuries. In the mid 15th century leather balls filled with cows hair were also used. Later, a ball called the featherie was introduced. This ball was a leather pouch filled with chicken or goose feathers. This ball survived into the 1800’s. In 1848 Rev. Robert Patterson invented the “guttie”, a ball made from dried sap of the malaysian Sapodilla tree. The Guttie was cheaper to produce and flew straighter so it quickly became the ball of choice. In 1898 Coban Haskel waiting for a golf date with Bertram Work at the B.F. Goodrich Company picked up some rubber tread, wound it into a ball and when he bounced it the ball flew almost to the ceiling. Haskel put a cover on it and it became known as the rubber Haskell golf ball. With various patented design improvements such as dimpling, this ball was used into the late 20th century. In the mid 60’s Spalding manufactured a ball with a chemical resin core making it a 2 piece ball, which is most commonly used by non professional golfers today.
