FUN FAct In 1971 the Minnesota Legislature authorized the acquisition and development of the Glacial Lakes State Trail. When the
DNR attempted to create the authorized trail their efforts were unsuccessful due to lack of public land ownership. In 1985 Burlington Northern abandoned an eighteen mile grade between Willmar and Hawick and in 1988 an additional 18.5 miles were abandoned from Hawick to Richmond. In 1990 the DNR acquired the abandoned railroad grade from Willmar to Hawick which was paved in 1998. An additional trail segment from New London to Paynesville was paved in 2007.
